Monitoring Mondays: The Impact of Brexit on IT

This weekly series will provide a recap of the most relevant news to come out of the tech world over the past week, with a specific focus on IT monitoring. It is easy to become immersed in your daily requirements as a sysadmin, but you don’t want to be that guy who is unaware of an important product release or company announcement that may change the way you do your job. With this in mind, it will be the goal of this series to arm you with ‘must know’ information so you can start your week off on the right foot knowing you are properly prepared.

IT spending on the decline due to Brexit

With companies having some uncertainty on what the future holds due to Brexit, Gartner has reported that IT spending is expected to decrease by 2.5% in the UK. The Brexit decision involves a number of impactful implications for IT along with less spending, all of which are covered in our recently published blog on how Brexit will affect IT leaders. As more definitive information is known about the repercussions of Brexit, the IT market will continue to be impacted in ways that may put certain initiatives on hold.

Learnings from Monitorama 2016

The Monitorama conference has become a must-attend event for those in the IT monitoring business. Insightful presentations from qualified speakers, plentiful networking opportunities and a friendly atmosphere are just a few of the redeeming qualities of Monitorama, and we were happy to be in attendance this year! Monitorama 2016 covered several major monitoring themes that provided a number of takeaways for IT professionals to implement into their daily monitoring efforts. Be sure to read our blog on four of the most important learning points from Monitorama 2016.

Datacenter cooling upgrades

The process of upgrading a datacenter cooling system can be an expensive undertaking. With the evolution of datacenters being a primary factor in IT cost-efficiency decisions, a recent survey from Emerson Power Systems reported that half of all US datacenters are on course to have their cooling systems upgraded over the next year. This article from Computer Weekly does a nice job of breaking down how this may transform the way datacenters are run and how corporate infrastructure will change as a result.

How CIOs can achieve digital transformation

It is always important that IT takes on the role as a partner to the business, rather than just a supplier of technical services. CIO Insight has published an insightful article on how CIOs can ensure IT is aligned with the overall strategy of the business and how they can bring about digital change. In order to achieve transformation that accomplishes business goals, moving beyond the traditional IT infrastructure responsibilities should be on the mind of every CIO and IT leader. Here are some of the highlight statistics from the article:

 •    49% said business treats and manages IT as more of a "supplier" of tech services, while 22% said the tech department acts as a "consultant" to provide input on plans for business as related to IT
•    72% of non-IT execs said the improvement of the effectiveness of IT business processes should be a priority, but just 57% of tech execs agree
•    69% of execs at companies in which IT is a business partner said the tech department collaborates with business on digital initiatives
