UPS/Switch etc. monitoring

Hello,

I am trying to understand exactly how this program works(I am considering to buy it). If I understand correctly, I can monitor servers by installing the agent to it, wich sends the data to the opsview database. But my question is: How is the data from other devices like UPS's and Switches, wich you can't install the agent to, send to the database?

thank you!

Re: UPS/Switch etc. monitoring

These devices run SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), which is in essence an 'agent'. Opsview talks to the SNMP software running on your UPS, Switch, etc which tells Opsview what it can monitor - i.e. charge retained for the UPS, packets per second on a network interface, etc. These are called OID's or object identifiers (metrics, essentially) - you can look online to see what OID's (metrics) your device can return for Opsview to monitor for you as these are stored in that device or products MIB (management information base).

Hope this clears things up!

Sam
