How do I monitor OPEN VMS with Opsview

How do I monitor OPEN VMS with Opsview. As I'm new to this is there a step by step guide for OPEN VMS monitoring setup. Do I need to create another virtual server running nagios or can nagios be "enabled" on this Ops View Atom virtual server.

Thanks in advance

Tony

Hi Tony,

Hi Tony,

Just moving this into the Atom section. For Open VMS, there isnt a step by step guide - however there are a few nagios plugins out there you could use, such as http://sourceforge.net/projects/nrpe-vms/

Best,

Sam

Hi Sam,

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your advice. I downloaded and configured the nagios VMS client from sourceforge but the OPSView server is unable to talk to it. This is my fault because I'm new to npre and Opsview. In the OpenvMS log it runs through all the command files and fails  at the end with "Could not read request from client, bailing out..." There is no options for monitoring Options VMS in OPSView so I selected monitoring options for OS-Unix Base and OS - Unix Agentless.

Not sure where to go from here. Any assistance is appreciated.

Regards

Tony

Thanks SAM. I've being doing

Thanks SAM. I've being doing a lot of research since last time and even got nagios core going to test check nrpe. I've got past my last openvms nrpe problem and I have the nrpe agent working on openvms.

I suppose my final question is how do I add a nrpe host to opsview? With nagios you can edit a cfg file but with opsview it's web based and most of the opsview config files I looked at are read only. There doesn't seem to be any option in web page in opsview to add a custom (openvms) nrpe host.

thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,

Hi Tony,

Do you mean host or service check?

Adding a host is really simple, just 'Settings > Hosts >' and click the green 'add' symbol.

To add a new service check, i.e. 'check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c openvms -a args-go-here', you can go to 'Settings > Service Checks', again click the green 'add' symbol and choose 'Plugin' at the bottom. Ensure the plugin is 'check_nrpe', create it as normal with the arguments, etc and once you've created the new check go to 'Settings > Hosts > Your_OpenVMS_Host > Monitors', find your new check, click it and then click submit - Thus 'applying it'.

Give it a reload and it should be there.

Hope this helps!

Sam
