What's New in Opsview V4.4

Today marks the release of Opsview V4.4 which has plenty of new features and updates alongside bug fixes and patches raised by Opsview customers.

Network Analyzer

The main feature available with the release of Opsview V4.4 is the Network Analyzer product that is available as a subscription module for existing and new Opsview Enterprise customers. The new Network Analyser module provides users insight into their network performance in terms of not just ‘How busy is my network?’, but more in-depth answers to ‘What is using my bandwidth?’, ‘Which users are downloading the most data?’ etc.

With the release, there are 7 new dashlets available ranging from “Top 10 Transfers” and “10 Top Port Receivers” through to “Sources Summary” and “Sources History” – with the latter allowing users a terrific view into their network's performance – allowing users to choose a specific time and date, and be able to view exactly what was happening on the network at that point in time:

Users can also choose to not only analyze their network performance but also backup and audit the configuration on their devices as below:

Service Desk Integration

In addition to our existing portfolio of service desks, Opsview can now integrate with Service Cloud (Salesforce.com’s service desk offering), and also OTRS –a very popular request by Opsview’s customers.

This allows customers a choice of 5 service desks to integrate their Opsview system with:

  • JIRA
  • ServiceNow
  • Request Tracker
  • Service Cloud
  • OTRS

By integrating Opsview with users helpdesk’s / service desk’s, tickets can be automatically created and assigned into the service desk by Opsview based upon a set of criteria. This allows administrators to say, for example “When this error occurs on these devices between these hours/days, create a ticket and assign it to me”.  This powerful integration saves time and hassle for the support team, so they can focus on resolving tickets.

Improved Roles / Multi-Tenancy

Also in Opsview Enterprise V4.4 are new and improved multi-tenancy options, allowing users the much requested ability to create roles within roles. For example, if a customer is a managed service provider (MSP), and has their customers logging directly into Opsview – the MSP can now grant the customer options to further define user control on their own hosts.

For example, I am “Hosting Company X” and I have a customer “Toms Tyres” who has 150 devices ranging from network devices, servers and SAN devices. As “Hosting Company X”, I use a role to restrict any user of “Toms Tyres” so that when they login, they can only see “Toms Tyres” devices.

However, what users can do now in V4.4 is allow customers of Toms Tyres to further sub-restrict devices. I.e. Toms Administrator logs in, and says “We need 3 roles – one for server admins, one for network admins, and one for SAN admins”. They can now do this, and restrict users to not just “All Toms Tyres”, but “Network devices – Toms Tyres”, as per their requirements.

Multi-tenacy roles

The roles configuration pages have also been improved in Opsview V4.4, taking them from this:

This makes it even easier for new users to understand the access controls, whilst giving existing users a better experience by improving the layout into easy to understand sections.

Amazon CloudWatch

Also new in V4.4 is the Amazon CloudWatch “host templates”. This allows Opsview customers to now monitor:

  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon ELB

Amazon Monitoring

The above image is an example of a newly created Amazon EC2 host being monitored using Opsview V4.4.

This is a very valuable improvement to Opsview Enterprise, as we now not only have on-demand images for Opsview along with world-renowned enterprise customers running fully on AWS – we also have the ability to monitor AWS via the API allowing us a great insight into how our infrastructure is performing.
