Requesting Feedback: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server platform support
In the past there has been some interest in us formally supporting SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), I was just wondering whether this was still the case?
Formal support would involve us testing on SLES (r11) and releasing installation packages. We would also provide support for this distribution under the Opsview Enterprise subscription.
Does anyone know whether packages created for SLES are compatible with the equivalent OpenSUSE release?
I've just purchased a bunch of SUSE Enterprise Server subscriptions. The plan is to introduce support for SUSE Enterprise 11 in Opsview 3.9 / 3.10 assuming we don't hit any major issues during testing.
We are a Windows/SLES/Ubuntu shop, so SLES support would make things slightly easier. Right now I just compile client plugins directly from Nagios.
What's the status of this?
3.9 is released, is sles support available...?
It is not available yet but we're still expecting to introduce during the 3.9.x release cycle.
I think SLES agent is important to have (recently had to compile NRPE by hand on a SLES :() ...
For Opsview base/core... I like to think of Opsview almost as an Appliance... does it really matter that much the base operating system on which it is installed? Is that much operation done on the Master/Slaves for people to have to be familiar with the base operating system?
We are running several SLES (and Open-SuSE) machines in production. Also a (pure) nagios-server is running on SLES but to 'test' opsview I downloaded the VMware appliance (Ubuntu). But because of Ubuntu being so different from SLES it would be great for us to have opsview on SLES. Even better if it will be a virtual appliance for VMware now they are supporting this themselves!
But even more important will be an agent for SLES soon!
Ed
We had OPSview running on SLES 10 32 bit and now on SLES 11 64 bit, the compiling takes a while but it works good if all the requirements are met. I didn't had too many problems. and it runs stable.
We have configured a master monitor server sles 11 x64 at the office with a mysql db on a seperate sles 11 x64 connecting to multiple off-site slaves which are sles 10/11 x86 (major fuckup at my end because the slave server binaries are compiled from the master this didn't work that well, and re-installing the slave servers isn't an option.)
I will be compiling the latest community release for SLES 11 x86 fairly soon.
I have also installed OPSview on Ubuntu which was extremely easy compared to the manual compliling... Hope there will be some OPSview pachages for SLES soon :-)
why SLES? we are a Novell partner and every system we put in the field is either windows or SLES at the moment, our expertise and the customers training is mainly SuSE.
let me know if I can help out!
greetings,
Dave

Did you have any issues?
I had problems with the libxml2 of the SLES 11 distribution (obviously not supported) and now with Catalyst-View-RRDGraph-0.03 during the make process of opsview-perl.
Do you have a write up of your compiling procedure?
Best Regards
T.S.
sorry, it was a while since i compiled it and a laptop crash deleted my compile notes. see the other post about the libxml2 stuff.
watch out with libxml2 though, it can break Yast :-P
i'll be doing another compile one of these days so i'll keep you posted.

Dave

this would be very great! looking forward to it.

Please note that SLES 10 agents for i368 and x86 are available at http://www.opsview.com/downloads/opsview-agents
What is the current status here?
We are willing to setup a production opsview server based on SLES 11 ASAP(community edition/ later may change to enteprise).
I tried to compile it on SLES 11 x64 but there have been issues with limxml2 during installtion of opsview-perl. During the make process I had the error of the libxml2 from SLES not beeing supported. I forced the make process, now I the installation gets stuck in
opsview:/usr/src/opsview_3.9.1-sources/opsview-perl-3.9.1.365 # make
echo 3.9.1.exported > version
DESTDIR= ./tools/build_perl_modules -d /usr/local/nagios/perl -m ./perlmods
Can't chdir into Catalyst-View-RRDGraph-0.03 at ./tools/build_perl_modules line 188.
make: *** [all] Error 2
Dont know what to do yet ...
... not very happy...
On your supported platform page there is stated:
"SUSE Enterprise 11 x86/x86-64 Unsupported. Due to be introduced before end of 2010"
I am sure we are not the only company requesting SLES support.
Your Statement is very appriciated.

Hi TS,
I had some problems with the libxml too, currently i have installed the following versions:
S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository
--+---------------+---------+--------------+--------+------------------
i | libxml2 | package | 2.7.7-4.1 | x86_64 | (System Packages)
i | libxml2-32bit | package | 2.7.1-10.9.1 | x86_64 | (System Packages)
i | libxml2-devel | package | 2.7.7-4.1 | x86_64 | (System Packages)
I think i downloaded these from the http://software.opensuse.org/ but most dependencies we're resolved for me by using the SLE 11 SDK dvd's downloadable from Novell.
greetings,
Dave
Hi Dave,
thank you for your reply, which was also very fast...
I will give it a try!

Tobias
We have started compiling Opsview for SLES11 internally (I put instructions for our packaged install here: http://docs.opsview.com/doku.php?id=opsview-community:sles-installation)
I'll see if I can provide you with our RPM's directly if you are interested in trying them out before general release.

Great:)
Thank you, good support! I will give it a try and give you a feedback, too.

Yes, would be nice if you could provide us with the RPMs.
Tobias
Hi Duncan,
what about the RPMs for SLES11? although Community 3.11.0 should be available soon (?)
Regards,
TS
Please email me directly and I'll let you have the SLES11 RPM's early, with the understanding there may still be code changes (and therefore bugfixes) before the official release within the next few weeks.
Docs are linked off http://docs.opsview.org/doku.php?id=opsview-community in the 'Installation and Initial Configuration' section. If you have any installation problems please email me directly - after the official release support will be via the forums again.

Update: SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 support will be provided from the Opsview Community 3.11.0 release.
This is due out in the next week or two. I've updated our documentation to reflect this.
great work!
spares me a lot of compile work.
> spares me a lot of compile work.
oh yes :) good news.

Would be great if you could keep as up to date concerning the community release via mail.
what is the status here? Any news on when the official SLES-support for community edition will be available?
Best Regards
T.
The community version should be available within the next two weeks.
I can give you a version now if you would like to try it beforehand if you email me directly (duncan.ferguson@opsera.com)

Support for SLES in form of packages would be great. Many of our Customers in Austria and Germany use SLES.
